Retired Ohio Sheriff And K-9 Partner Die Hours Apart

Last Wednesday, two heroes died just hours apart.

One from cancer and one from a suspected broken heart.

Ohio Sheriff Dan McClelland and a tiny K-9 named Midge formed an unbreakable bond during their time together serving the residents of Geauga County.

McClelland was on the force for 44 years, serving as sheriff for the last 13 years. Midge, a drug-sniffing Chihuahua mix, was his loyal partner for 10 years.

Midge was a local celebrity and even set a world record. In 2006, she was entered into Guinness World Records as the world’s smallest police dog.

Her petite size allowed her to go where other drug dogs couldn’t.

Aside from fighting crime, the dynamic duo would do demonstrations and interact with the public at events.

Sheriff McClelland loved his job, and some thought he would never retire. But in 2016, he and Midge retired and started their next adventure together – hitting the open road in an RV (along with his wife).

Sadly, their retirement was cut short.

McClelland, 67, and Midge, 16, passed away last week – just hours apart. The sheriff lost his battle with cancer and the loyal pup died from a possible broken heart.

They will be buried together.

“It is with a heavy heart that I inform the residents of Geauga County that Retired Sheriff Dan McClelland has passed way,” posted the department.

The community sent their condolences with many fondly remembering their interactions with the pair.

One person commented, “Thank you Sheriff Dan and Midge for your service to Geauga County. They were never in a hurry, always stopped, listened and had conversation. May you Rest In Peace.”
