On October 11, 2021, Tuffy’s Pet Foods issued a voluntary recall of roughly 1,600 cases of Nutri Source Pure Vita Salmon Entree Dog Food in a Tetrapak carton due to elevated levels of Vitamin D.
The FDA warns that dogs of all sizes consuming very high levels of Vitamin D could have adverse reactions.
The recall was initiated following a notification from the product manufacturer for the potential of elevated levels of Vitamin D. The issue has been identified and corrective actions are in process to prevent it from happening again. The pet food company reassured consumers that no other Pure Vita products were impacted and said they issued the recall “out of an abundance of caution.”
No illnesses have been reported but consumers are urged to stop feeding the product listed below.
What Is Recalled?
The recalled dog food was distributed to pet stores nationwide. The only product recalled is Pure Vita Salmon Entrée Dog Food in a Tetrapak carton with UPC Code “0 73893 96202 1”.

Symptoms Of Vitamin D Toxicity In Dogs
– decreased appetite
– weight loss
– increased drinking and urination
– excessively drooling
The FDA states, “Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, so unlike water-soluble vitamins, when a dog – or other animal – gets too much, the excess is not rapidly excreted in his or her urine. Instead, it’s stored in fat tissue and the liver. Excessive vitamin D can lead to kidney failure and even death.”
Symptoms can occur in a matter of hours or days.
If you have fed any of the recalled product and your pet is showing any of the above symptoms, call your vet immediately.
What To Do
If you have purchased this food and the UPC number matches the recall, stop feeding immediately.
